“Past, Present, but What Now?” is a series of 5-panel artworks that delve into the complicated history of the LA River and its future. Acting as a “silent artistic protest,” this series represents the change in the La River, from a once peaceful and sustainable river to an inhabitable and off-putting channel for water drainage. The artwork itself focuses on the goal of advocating for the restoration of the LA River and exploring the nature of people’s awareness towards what seems like a “small issue” but in reality, a massive aspect that contributes to the community, making the fact that the river is unable to support life and the environment around it much more devastating. Through this artwork, the artist aims to make an impact on society’s view of nature and its relationship with humanity, further presenting the question, “To what extent is society willing to go to just to sustain nature, and to what extent is society willing to go to just to maintain safety in their communities?”
